Set Realistic Goals
Many people abandon perfectly good weight-loss programs before they even lace up their sneakers. Why? Because Americans live in a world filled with fast food, instant messaging, and five-sond glucose meters, anything without a quick payoff goes against the grain of the instant gratification ethic. While it would be nice to “drop inches in days!” as the miracle ads proclaim, the truth is that weight loss is a slow and (hopefully) steady process that takes time and commitment.
Setting realistic weight-loss goals for yourself can be a good motivator. Gradual weight loss is usually the safest method. A diet that cuts your normal calorie consumption (for your weight) by 500 to 1,000 will encourage weight loss. So will burning 500 to 1,000 calories each day with exercise. Your best bet is to strike a balance between the two, and make exercise—be it team sports, cycling, or walking—something you enjoy. Making a long-term healthy lifestyle change is essential to keeping the pounds off once they’re gone.
